US authorities have seized an Iranian oil tanker in the Indian Ocean, US officials announced late on Tuesday. The vessel, reportedly carrying 2 million barrels of crude oil, is the latest example of rising tensions between Washington and Tehran over Iran’s oil exports and nuclear programs.
According to US officials, the oil tanker, identified as the Lana, was intercepted in the Indian Ocean early on Tuesday by a US Navy warship. The ship was then boarded and crew members were taken into custody. Officials stated that the vessel was carrying Iranian crude oil destined for a port in China.
“This seizure is a clear indication of our commitment to enforcing US sanctions on Iran’s oil trade,” said a US Department of State spokesperson. “We will continue to take decisive action to disrupt Iran’s illicit oil networks and prevent the country from generating revenue for its destabilizing activities.”
The US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Iranian oil exports in November 2018, following the reimposition of sanctions by the Trump administration after the US withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. Iran had been a major oil exporter before the sanctions were reimposed, but has seen its oil exports plummet in recent years.
Tensions between the US and Iran have escalated in recent months, following a series of attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman and a US drone strike that killed top Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani in January 2020. Last month, US forces conducted airstrikes on Iranian missile bases in Syria.
Iranian officials have denied any involvement in attacks on oil tankers and have criticized the US for its aggressive actions in the region. Tehran has also threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway through which a significant portion of the world’s oil shipments pass.
The seizure of the Iranian oil tanker is likely to further exacerbate tensions between the US and Iran. Diplomats and analysts say that the incident is a sign of the increasing militarization of the oil trade, as countries seek to enforce sanctions and protect their economic interests in the face of rising competition for resources.
The Lana, the seized oil tanker, is now being redirected to the US port of Louisiana, where it will be offloaded and sold off at auction. US officials say that the proceeds from the sale will be paid to claimants in accordance with US law.
The seizure of the Iranian oil tanker is just the latest in a series of high-profile incidents involving US sanctions on Iran’s oil trade. In 2019, the US seized an Iranian oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman and later sold it off at auction. The Trump administration also seized Iranian oil shipments en route to Syria in 2018.
As the situation continues to unfold, experts say that the US-Iran showdown is just beginning, and will likely have far-reaching consequences for the global oil market and the broader Middle East.
