CENTCOM announced today that US military forces have launched airstrikes against Iranian-backed militias operating in Iraq and Syria. According to sources, the operation is part of a broader effort to deter Iranian aggression and protect the security of US personnel, coalition forces, and regional allies.
In a statement released to the media, General Erik Kurilla, Commander of US Central Command, stated that the strikes were conducted to defend regional security and deter further Iranian-backed aggression. “The United States is committed to deterring Iranian aggression and protecting the security of our personnel, coalition forces, and regional allies,” Kurilla said. “We will not hesitate to take action to defend ourselves, our partners, and our interests in the region.”
The airstrikes, which were reportedly carried out by US Air Force F-15 jets, targeted Iranian-backed militias operating in the Syrian province of Deir ez-Zor and the Iraqi province of Nineveh. According to CENTCOM, the strikes were carefully planned and executed to minimize harm to non-combatants.
“This operation is a clear demonstration of the United States’ commitment to regional security and stability,” said a senior military official, who wished to remain anonymous. “We will continue to take action to protect our interests and defend our allies in the region.”
The US has long been concerned about the growing influence of Iranian-backed militias in Iraq and Syria. These groups, which are often affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), have been involved in numerous attacks on US and coalition personnel, as well as local government forces.
In recent weeks, tensions have escalated significantly between the US and Iran, with both sides exchanging rhetoric and taking steps to demonstrate their military capabilities. The US has imposed economic sanctions on Iran, while Tehran has launched a series of ballistic missile tests and cyberattacks on US interests.
The airstrikes against Iranian-backed militias are the latest development in a series of military operations conducted by CENTCOM in the region. The US has maintained a significant military presence in the Middle East for several years, with forces operating in countries such as Iraq, Syria, and Jordan.
The operation is also expected to put pressure on the Biden administration to take a tougher stance on Iran, particularly in light of the recent escalation of tensions between the two countries. The US has long been pushing for a negotiated settlement to the ongoing conflict in Syria, but the Iranian-backed militias operating in the region have made it increasingly difficult for that goal to be achieved.
