US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Tuesday that American forces have taken a series of enforcement measures against commercial vessels bound for Iranian ports in an effort to ensure compliance with maritime regulations. According to official reports, since the reinforcement of the blockade in early March, U.S. forces have redirected 53 commercial vessels, disabled 2, and boarded 2 others.
The recent escalation in enforcement measures is part of a long-standing policy aimed at curtailing Iran’s ability to export prohibited commodities, including oil. Separate incidents have seen the disablement of two Iranian vessels in disputed waters, raising tensions between the United States and Iran. CENTCOM insists that these actions were taken in self-defense, with the vessels posing a threat to the safety and security of American personnel. Iranian officials, however, have denounced the incidents as unwarranted and provocative.
