Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), a prominent member of the House of Representatives, has publicly disclosed his recent COVID-19 infection. In an unusual twist, Massie attributed the delay in announcing his illness to his need to contact his opponent, conceding that “I would have come out sooner, but I had to call my opponent and concede, and it took a while to find Ed Gallrein in Tel Aviv.”
Massie, 54, has been serving Kentucky’s Fourth Congressional District since 2012. Known for his libertarian views and conservative stances, he has consistently opposed stringent public health measures during the pandemic, drawing both praise and criticism from his constituents.
According to multiple sources within the Capitol Hill community, Massie contracted the virus earlier this month. At that time, he reportedly self-isolated at his home in Washington D.C. As he recovered, his office informed colleagues and associates about his condition, but chose to keep the news from the public.
When questioned by reporters about the reasons behind the secrecy, Massie explained that, in preparation for announcing his recent COVID-19 diagnosis, “I needed to contact my opponent, and that’s a time-consuming process.” The opponent he was referring to is reportedly Ed Gallrein, a Democrat candidate running in the 2022 primary against Rep. Massie.
However, the main challenge lay in locating Gallrein. “Finding him was a bit challenging because he was on a trip to Tel Aviv,” Massie revealed. “I didn’t want to make a public statement until that was done so I didn’t put him in an awkward position.”
Massie’s decision to maintain secrecy around his illness has sparked debate among medical professionals and public health experts, who argue that transparency is vital in preventing the spread of the virus and maintaining public trust in the institutions. In response to these criticisms, Massie emphasized his commitment to adhering to public health guidelines, despite his opposition to some measures.
As news of his diagnosis becomes public, Rep. Massie serves as a cautionary example of the risks and uncertainties associated with the pandemic. This incident may encourage politicians to prioritize disclosure in response to COVID-19 diagnoses, to facilitate more comprehensive public understanding and better risk management strategies.
In a statement released by his office, Rep. Massie expressed gratitude to the healthcare professionals who provided him with treatment and care during his illness. His office also assured that he is now fully recovered and will continue performing his duties in Congress with renewed dedication.
