The United States Department of Defense (DoD) has recently unveiled its comprehensive plans for acquiring fighter jets over the next five fiscal years, from 2027 to 2031. The acquisition plan, a crucial component of the DoD’s Modernization Strategy, aims to bolster the nation’s air capabilities, enhance military readiness, and support the integration of cutting-edge technologies.
Under the procurement plan, the United States Air Force (USAF) will acquire 222 F-35A Lightning II multirole fighter aircraft, a variant designed for conventional takeoff and landing operations. Under these plans, the USN will acquire 162 F-35C Lightning II aircraft, the carrier variant designed for catapult-assisted takeoffs. The F-35C is optimized for naval operations, offering advanced sensors, precision-guided munitions, and carrier-based air superiority capabilities.
The USMC will also acquire 41 F-35B Lightning II aircraft, the short takeoff and vertical landing variant. The F-35B, designed for expeditionary operations, provides the USMC with an advanced, multirole fighter capable of operating from a variety of platforms, including amphibious ships and forward bases.
