‘US-Iran Talks on Thin Ice as Appointment of Iranian Negotiation Head Remains Uncertain’

Iran’s diplomatic efforts to negotiate a long-awaited deal with the United States have hit a snag, as the appointment of the head of Iran’s delegation for the talks remains unresolved. According to Iran’s Tasnim news agency, the Supreme National Security Council is still reviewing various aspects of the proposed appointment, fueling speculation about the possibility of a breakthrough in the stalled talks.

Iran has long sought to reach a comprehensive agreement with the US, particularly in the wake of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal. Tensions between the two nations escalated following the withdrawal of the US from the JCPOA in 2018, under the presidency of Donald Trump. The move led to a significant escalation of tensions, including military confrontation in January 2019.

The current diplomatic efforts aim to revive the JCPOA and pave the way for a more comprehensive agreement, addressing the issues at the heart of the Iran nuclear crisis, including access to the country’s nuclear facilities and limits on uranium enrichment. However, significant hurdles remain, including the long-standing demands by Iran that its negotiating team be headed by someone acceptable to the Supreme Leadership.

According to sources familiar with the negotiations, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has final approval authority over the appointment of the head of the country’s delegation. In this context, any individual selected for this critical role must win the Supreme Leader’s confidence. Iranian deputy parliament speaker Ali Nikzad hinted at the importance of winning US acceptance of Iran’s demands in any proposed deal.

“If the U.S. does not accept our ten conditions for the negotiations, the Supreme Leader will not allow a permanent deal to be signed,” Nikzad said, emphasizing the significance of US cooperation. In this highly charged context, Iran is under increasing pressure to demonstrate its commitment to negotiating a mutually acceptable deal.

Given the stakes involved, it is not clear how the Supreme National Security Council’s ongoing review of Iran’s proposed negotiation head will ultimately impact the negotiations. In light of the tense negotiations and the long history of Iran-US diplomatic efforts, it remains unclear whether a breakthrough can be achieved anytime soon.
