Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated as Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baqaei, responded to claims made by US Secretary Marco Rubio, alleging that Iranian proxies obstruct efforts to achieve regional peace. In a statement released earlier today, Baqaei firmly rejected these allegations, highlighting the need for Washington to reassess its interventionist foreign policy approach.
According to official sources, US Secretary Rubio stated that Iranian proxy forces are responsible for disrupting regional peace efforts, sparking widespread condemnation from Tehran. In response, Esmaeil Baqaei emphasized that peace cannot be realized in the region as long as “American militarism and interventionism persist.” The Iranian diplomat further emphasized that the ongoing US presence in the region remains a significant obstacle, fostering conflict, violence, and genocide.
Iran’s official stance reflects long-standing concerns about the adverse impact of US-led military interventions in regional nations, with Baqaei pointing to the “endless wars” the US has perpetuated across the region, as well as its alleged complicity in “terror violence and atrocities.” This marked a sharp rebuke by Iran against US military actions in the region, which the Iranian government views as an infringement on its sovereignty.
Tensions between the US and Iran have been escalating over recent months, fueled largely by Washington’s long-standing disputes over the terms of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which was intended to regulate Iran’s nuclear activities. Iran suspended some of its commitments under the deal in 2020, following which Tehran’s enrichment of uranium to levels exceeding the pact’s limits triggered a US-led campaign to reimpose international sanctions on Iran.
The situation in the Middle East remains volatile, with various nations actively involved in diplomatic efforts to restore regional stability. In this context, the remarks by Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei underscore the need for sustained engagement between the US and Iran to address contentious areas of their relationship and to stabilize the broader region.
