AMMAN, JORDAN – In a significant escalation of the growing US-Iranian conflict, multiple Iranian ballistic missiles have struck the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in northeastern Jordan, prompting a swift response from international leaders. The attack comes just hours after the United States announced the deployment of a Patriot missile defense system to Jordan, aimed at bolstering regional security and protecting against potential Iranian missile threats.
According to eyewitnesses and officials, at least 10 ballistic missiles were fired from Iranian soil, landing within the air base’s perimeter. The attack has caused significant damage, with reports suggesting multiple buildings and infrastructure have been severely damaged. Jordanian officials have confirmed no immediate reports of casualties among their military personnel or civilians.
“This dastardly act of aggression by Iran constitutes a flagrant disregard for regional stability and international law,” Jordans’ Prime Minister, Bisher Al-Khasawneh, condemned in a statement. “We stand in solidarity with our regional and international partners to denounce and punish such acts of aggression.”
The US Patriot missile system, a widely used and highly effective air defense system, was reportedly transported to Jordan via a US military transport aircraft. According to military officials, the Patriot system was deployed to protect “friendly forces and infrastructure” from Iranian missile threats, which have long been a concern in the region.
“This deployment of a Patriot missile defense system is a necessary measure to ensure the security and stability of Jordan and the region,” the US Embassy in Amman stated in a release. “We will continue to work closely with our Jordanian partners to counter emerging threats and protect against Iranian aggression.”
Regional tensions have been building for months, with the US imposing sanctions on several Iranian officials and entities over alleged human rights abuses and malign activities. Iran has long claimed that US sanctions on its oil industry are an overreach of authority and an attempt to strangle its economy.
The strike on the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base appears to mark a significant escalation in the conflict between the US and Iran. As international pressure mounts on Iran to reconsider its military actions, the diplomatic landscape in the region is on the cusp of a significant shift.
“This is a grave escalation of a conflict that has been simmering for far too long,” said a senior US official, who wished to remain anonymous. “We will take all necessary measures to ensure our interests and partners are protected from Iranian aggression.”
