US Marine Corps Seeks $158 Million for Procurement of Advanced TAMIR Interceptors and MRIC Launchers

The United States Marine Corps has submitted a budget request for $158 million in fiscal year 2027 (FY ’27) for the procurement of advanced air defense systems. The funding will be used to acquire 410 Tamir interceptors and 16 MRIC launchers, marking a significant upgrade to the Corps’ air defense capabilities.

The Tamir interceptor is an upgraded version of the existing Tamir missile system, known for its effectiveness in engaging low-flying aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The upgraded version features enhanced range and precision, allowing it to intercept targets at distances of up to 25 kilometers. The estimated cost of one upgraded Tamir interceptor is $314,000, making it a significant investment in the Corps’ air defense capabilities.

The MRIC launcher is a critical component of the Tamir system, providing the necessary platform for the interceptors to be launched from. The 16 MRIC launchers requested in the FY ’27 budget will be used to support the deployment of the 410 Tamir interceptors, providing a layered air defense capability that can engage targets at various ranges.

The request for funding for the Tamir interceptors and MRIC launchers comes at a time when the US Marine Corps is undergoing significant modernization efforts. The Corps has identified air defense as a key area of concern, with the need to counter increasingly sophisticated air threats. The acquisition of the Tamir interceptors and MRIC launchers is a key component of these modernization efforts, allowing the Corps to maintain a competitive edge in the face of evolving threats.

The $158 million requested for FY ’27 represents a significant investment in the US Marine Corps’ air defense capabilities. The acquisition of the Tamir interceptors and MRIC launchers will provide the Corps with a robust and effective air defense system, capable of engaging a wide range of targets. The funding request is now before the US Congress, which will review and debate the Corps’ budget request in the coming months.

In a statement, a US Marine Corps spokesperson noted that the acquisition of the Tamir interceptors and MRIC launchers is critical to supporting the Corps’ ability to operate in a contested air environment. “The US Marine Corps is committed to maintaining a robust and effective air defense capability, and the acquisition of these advanced systems will enable us to do just that,” the spokesperson said.
