A Moroccan military search team has successfully recovered one of the bodies from the two US service members who went missing last week during the African Lion 26 exercise in Morocco.
According to a statement released by AFRICOM (African Command), the body was identified as that of 1st Lt. Kendrick Lamont Key Jr., 27, from Richmond, Virginia. Key was a platoon leader assigned to Charlie Battery, 5th Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command.
The recovery of Key’s body was reportedly achieved after an extensive search and rescue operation, which involved the Moroccan military, AFRICOM, and US Special Forces personnel. His body was found along the shoreline roughly one mile from the point at which both service members were last seen entering the ocean.
Efforts to locate the second missing service member continue in earnest, with AFRICOM stating that the search operation remains underway. While the exact circumstances surrounding Key’s disappearance are currently unknown, sources close to the operation suggest that adverse weather conditions may have contributed to the incident.
African Lion 26, the large-scale joint military exercise aimed at strengthening regional security capacity and enhancing interoperability between US and partner forces in the region, concluded just days before the incident. The operation saw the involvement of over 1,300 troops from 12 countries, including Morocco, the US, and France.
While details surrounding the recovery of Key’s body and the ongoing search for the second missing service member are expected to emerge in due course, the incident serves as a poignant reminder of the risks and sacrifices faced by military personnel serving in various capacities around the world.
AFRICOM has committed to providing further updates as more information becomes available, while efforts to return Key to his home state to receive the respect and honors due to a fallen military hero are already underway.
As the search and rescue mission continues, tributes to Key and his fellow service member from the international community and local residents alike have flooded social media platforms. Condolences have been extended to Key’s family and loved ones, while many have praised the bravery and service of this US military member who will be deeply missed.
The incident also serves as a poignant reminder of the strong and enduring bond between the US and Morocco, as well as the US commitment to regional security in North Africa. The incident highlights the challenges that military service personnel and units often face, and the need for continued collaboration between nations to enhance regional stability.
