In a move likely to intensify regional tensions, the US military has began deploying its tanker aircraft to conduct in-air refueling operations over the Persian Gulf, sources familiar with the matter said. The operation, which appears to be a clear show of force, comes at a time when relations between the US and Iran have remained increasingly strained.
According to a US Defense official, the decision to launch these operations was made in response to the recent surge in aggressive maritime behavior exhibited by Iran’s naval forces. The official further emphasized that these operations are meant to “deter any potential Iranian aggression in the region” and to ensure “stable and unimpeded maritime traffic.”
The aerial refueling mission, which involves mid-air refueling of US military aircraft by tanker planes, is set to take place over the Persian Gulf, a strategic waterway that connects the Indian Ocean to the Arabian Sea through the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait, which is one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes, is a vital artery for global oil supplies, with around a third of all seaborne oil traded globally passing through it.
US military officials confirmed that this operation will involve a rotation of personnel and aircraft from bases in the Middle East and the US. While the exact number of aircraft involved was not disclosed, military experts speculate that multiple KC-46 and KC-135 tactical tankers will be deployed to support the operation.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry swiftly responded to the development, denouncing the US move as a “provocative act.” An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated, “This move would further escalate tensions in the region and destabilize the sensitive security balance in the area.”
The US operation comes in the wake of several high-profile incidents involving Iran’s naval forces, including the hijacking of a South Korean tanker and the attempted seizure of a US Navy unmanned aerial vehicle. These incidents have raised concerns among US officials and military strategists that Iranian naval forces are seeking to project their power and assert their dominance over key maritime routes.
A senior Pentagon official emphasized that the operation is designed to promote stability and deter aggression in the region. “Our aim is to maintain free and safe passage for all nations and vessels through the Strait of Hormuz,” the official stated.
Analysts warn that the intensification of tensions between the US and Iran carries the risk of a miscalculation, potentially drawing in other regional players such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
