Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency (FNA) released a statement announcing the deployment of American military planes over the country’s southern region, amidst heightened tensions in the Middle East. US Air Force (USAF) jet reconnaissance aircraft have reportedly been observed conducting reconnaissance and surveillance operations over Bandar Abbas, a strategic port city on the Persian Gulf.
Details of the incident have been confirmed by high-ranking Iranian military officials. According to an Iranian military spokesperson, two F-35 fighter jets were identified amongst the US reconnaissance flights over Bandar Abbas earlier this week. Iranian security forces allegedly intercepted the planes while they were conducting their reconnaissance mission, prompting swift action to deter any possible hostile intentions.
The presence of US military jets in the region has further exacerbated already strained relations between Washington and Tehran. Iranian authorities have historically viewed US military presence in their airspace as an affront to national sovereignty. FNA sources claimed Iranian fighter jets scrambled to respond to the presence of the US reconnaissance planes and that the encounter occurred approximately 80 miles southwest of Bandar Abbas.
US Department of Defense (DoD) representatives thus far have declined to comment on the specific incident. However, Pentagon officials stated the flight operation was part of an ongoing exercise designed to enhance military preparedness in the Persian Gulf region.
The US and its regional allies have repeatedly stated their intent to maintain a military presence in the oil-rich region, citing a need to counter potential threats from Iranian and other regional military forces. Iran has in turn accused the US of attempting to exert undue military influence in a strategic area crucial to global energy supply chains.
While FNA reported that US military aircraft flew at an altitude of approximately 10,000 feet, a senior Iranian Air Force officer claimed Iranian fighter jets were within visual range of the US reconnaissance aircraft at a lower altitude. However, details regarding the specifics of the encounter remain unverified and it remains unclear whether any communication took place between the US and Iranian fighter planes.
The heightened military activity in the region has contributed to ongoing concerns regarding an increase in regional militancy.
