Prolonged deployments of the US Navy’s USS Abraham Lincoln have resulted in dire living conditions for its crew, according to text messages obtained by journalist Aaron Parnas. The messages reveal widespread shortages of essential supplies and basic amenities, with sailors struggling to maintain morale amidst an ongoing operational deployment linked to tensions with Iran.
Sources within the USS Abraham Lincoln indicate a disturbing trend: sailors have been deprived of fresh food staples like milk for three months, forcing them to rely almost exclusively on non-perishable items like meat, which can be frozen for extended periods. However, when it comes to other food groups, such as fruits and vegetables, these cannot survive the lengthy supply chain, with some shipments arriving in an inedible state, described as “rotten.”
A service member speaking on the condition of anonymity to protect their identity detailed the dire circumstances, describing their current deployment as “the worst one” they have experienced. This individual, who holds significant experience in deployments, stated that even colleagues with extended military service believed the ongoing deployment to be their worst, and that conditions could potentially worsen.
Beyond the lack of essential supplies, many crew members have expressed frustration with the prolonged time spent at sea and the lengthened duration of their separation from loved ones. The repeated extensions of their deployment have undoubtedly taken a toll on the sailors’ mental health and family relationships.
Some crew members appear to be questioning the intentions behind the prolonged deployment. In discussions among sailors, one colleague reportedly suggested that the deployment might be an “experiment” to test the limits of sailors’ endurance while out at sea under extreme circumstances. However, there is no evidence to confirm whether this is an official government initiative or simply a product of speculation within the crew.
As tensions between the US and Iran continue, the USS Abraham Lincoln remains on operational deployment supporting regional security. However, concerns regarding the welfare and treatment of its crew are now emerging, raising important questions about the impact of extended deployments on sailors’ physical and mental well-being.
