US Official Pushes Hamas Toward Disarmament and Demilitarization in Egyptian Talks

In a crucial development aimed at stabilizing the volatile Gaza Strip, Jared Kushner, the son-in-law and a senior advisor to US President Donald Trump, held a high-level meeting with Hamas leaders in Egypt today. According to Axios, Kushner’s talks with Hamas marked the first time a senior American official has met with the Palestinian Islamist organization’s leadership since the parties agreed to end the October war.

Joining Kushner at the negotiations were Nickolay Mladenov, the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, and Tony Blair, a former British Prime Minister who has played a key role in international efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. On the Hamas side, Khalil al-Hayya, the organization’s chief politician, was accompanied by several high-ranking officials, including Egypt’s intelligence chief Hassan Rashad, Qatari diplomat Ali al-Thawadi, and a senior Turkish official.

During the discussions, Kushner reportedly pressed his interlocutors on concrete steps toward disarming and demilitarizing Gaza. The focus of the talks included transferring power to a Palestinian technocratic government, decommissioning Hamas military infrastructure, and deploying the Israeli Security Forces (ISF) in the coastal enclave. In exchange for progress on these goals, Kushner advocated for corresponding Israeli withdrawals and increased humanitarian aid.

The Board of Peace, a US-led initiative comprising international partners and aimed at promoting stability in Gaza, has been actively pushing for disarmament and demilitarization of Hamas. Its representatives are believed to have made significant headway in negotiations with Israeli officials, paving the way for Kushner’s talks with Netanyahu on Monday. The Israeli Prime Minister will discuss potential concessions, which could include territorial withdrawals and enhanced humanitarian assistance.

As tensions in Gaza continue to simmer, Kushner’s efforts mark a crucial attempt to bring a lasting resolution to the region’s chronic conflict. Whether the talks yield a tangible breakthrough remains to be seen, but the high-stakes meeting in Egypt highlights the pressing need for sustained diplomatic engagement to address the complexities and challenges facing Palestinian stakeholders.
