A dramatic and tense standoff unfolded in the early hours of the morning in the critical Strait of Hormuz, as a US oil tanker attempted to transit the vital waterway with its radar system turned off. The attempt, which was intercepted by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy, resulted in the tanker being forced to stop and turn back, prompting a retaliatory strike from the US military against an area near Bandar Abbas.
According to a military source that spoke to Tasnim News Agency, the US oil tanker’s decision to travel through the Strait with its radar system deactivated was deemed suspicious by Iranian naval authorities. The source revealed that the IRGC Navy had been tracking the vessel and deemed its actions a direct challenge to Iranian sovereignty.
In response to the tanker’s actions, the IRGC Navy issued a series of warning shots in an attempt to halt the vessel and secure its compliance. Despite the warnings, the US oil tanker continued to move forward, prompting the IRGC Navy to escalate their response. The tanker was eventually forced to stop and reverse course, abandoning its attempt to transit the Strait.
The US response to the interception was swift and decisive, with US military personnel launching a strike against an area near Bandar Abbas, approximately 200 miles from the Strait. The strike, which was reportedly carried out using precision-guided munitions, resulted in no casualties or material damage.
A spokesperson for the US military stated that the strike was a necessary measure to protect US interests and deter future incidents in the region. “We will not tolerate the harassment of our vessels in international waters,” the spokesperson said. “Our actions today demonstrate our commitment to maintaining freedom of navigation and upholding the principles of the law of the sea.”
The incident marks the latest in a series of escalating tensions between the US and Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway that connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and serves as a major transit route for international oil shipments. The Strait has been the site of numerous confrontations between the US and Iran in recent years, including a series of attacks on oil tankers and the downing of a US drone in 2019.
