MANILA, Philippines – Exercise Balikatan 2026, a yearly joint training event between the Philippines and the United States, has brought forth the deployment of cutting-edge remote-controlled unmanned surface vessels. Personnel from the US 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) were seen utilizing these advanced platforms in the waters off the western coast of Itbayat, a municipality in the northern Philippines.
According to sources, the drone boats employed by the elite US operatives were designed to deliver high-precision, explosive payloads – in the form of shaped charges – against a mock target vessel. This tactical maneuver serves as a testament to the evolving nature of naval warfare, with drone technology increasingly playing a pivotal role in the execution of modern military operations.
Notably, the unmanned surface vessels operated by the US Special Forces bore a striking resemblance to Ukraine’s Magura V7, widely regarded as one of the most combat-proven naval platforms currently in use. This Ukrainian design has garnered international attention for its versatility and reliability, having seen successful deployments in a variety of operational environments.
“It’s quite remarkable to see how our counterparts have adapted this innovative technology for their own use,” says a US military official, who wished to remain anonymous. “The potential for drone boats to enhance our naval capabilities is vast, particularly in areas where manned operations may be impractical or carry undue risk.”
Exercise Balikatan, now in its 37th iteration, is designed to foster cooperation and strengthen ties between the Philippines and the United States. The event brings together over 8,000 personnel from both sides, with an emphasis on enhancing interoperability and refining joint combat readiness.
As advancements in unmanned systems continue to accelerate, it remains to be seen how the US and other nations will integrate such technology into their naval operations. However, Exercise Balikatan 2026 has provided a glimpse into a future where drone boats such as the Magura V7 will increasingly play a vital role in achieving tactical objectives.
In the face of an evolving threat landscape, militaries globally are increasingly looking to leverage cutting-edge capabilities such as advanced drone technology. The US Special Forces’ deployment of these platforms in the Exercise Balikatan setting serves as a timely reminder of the importance of staying ahead of the curve in order to stay ahead of an increasingly complex adversary.
The Exercise Balikatan 2026 joint training exercise is set to conclude later this month.
