Caracas, Venezuela – In the wake of the devastating twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela in recent weeks, the country’s citizens are increasingly focused on one issue above others: fresh elections. According to a recent poll conducted by AtlasIntel for Bloomberg News, nearly half of Venezuelans believe that holding new elections is a greater priority than rebuilding and recovering from the disaster.
The poll, which surveyed over 1,500 Venezuelans in June, showed that 45.7% of respondents considered elections to be a higher priority, while 32.6% believed that restoration and reconstruction efforts should take precedence. The results reflect growing public frustration with the government’s handling of the crisis, which has left thousands of people without access to basic necessities like food, water, and shelter.
Furthermore, the poll highlighted the increasing disapproval of President Nicolás Rodríguez, whose approval rating has seen a significant decline in recent months. According to the poll, Rodríguez’s disapproval rating rose to 63.3% in June, representing a nearly five-percentage-point increase from May.
A staggering 64.3% of respondents also expressed disapproval of the government’s handling of the earthquake disaster, while a majority of those surveyed – 52.4% – rated the response as “very poor.” This assessment of government performance is likely linked to the widespread reports of bureaucratic inefficiencies and inadequate emergency services in the wake of the quakes.
The poll results are reflective of a broader trend of discontent with Venezuela’s government. As the country struggles to recover from this latest disaster, the people of Venezuela are increasingly calling for greater accountability from their leaders. While rebuilding efforts are undoubtedly crucial to the rebuilding and recovery of the affected areas, it appears that a large segment of the population is more focused on holding the government accountable through the electoral process.
As the situation in Venezuela continues to unfold, it will be essential for the government to address the growing public dissatisfaction and meet the needs of those who have been affected by the disaster. The recent poll results serve as a reminder of the need for urgent action to restore trust and confidence in the government’s ability to respond to the nation’s most pressing challenges.
