Mexico City, Mexico – In a recent update from the National Seismological Service (SSN) of Mexico, the earthquake that rocked the southeastern state of Veracruz on Tuesday has been downgraded to a magnitude of 4.4. The initial measurements indicated the quake had a magnitude of 4.8.
The SSN reported that the epicenter of the quake was located in the vicinity of the city of Coatzacoalcos, with the earthquake striking at 9:34 a.m. local time. The downgraded measurement does not alter the fact that the quake caused widespread damage and fear among residents.
Fortunately, there have been no reports of fatalities or serious injuries resulting from the earthquake. Emergency responders and rescue teams were quickly dispatched to the affected areas and were able to swiftly respond to any potential emergencies.
The quake was reportedly shallow, with a depth of approximately 10 kilometers, which is a contributing factor to the magnitude being downgraded. When earthquakes have a shallow depth, the energy released is more concentrated but does not travel as far and is typically less destructive.
Local residents were shaken by the quake, with many reporting feeling the effects strongly. “The earthquake startled me, I was in my apartment trying to work when the floors started shaking and objects fell off the shelves,” said resident Ana Maria Garcia. “But fortunately, it was not as severe as I feared.”
Following the initial quake, there were several aftershocks reported, which were also measured in the range of 3.5 to 4.1 magnitude. Experts warn that aftershocks can continue to occur in the affected area for several days following a quake.
The SSN has assured locals that there is no heightened risk of a larger quake occurring in the area, and that the aftershocks should gradually decrease in frequency and intensity over time.
The residents of Veracruz have been told to be vigilant but not alarmed by the aftershocks, and that they should follow standard emergency procedures. With no reports of fatalities and the quake being downgraded, the situation in the affected area appears to be under control.
In related news, emergency responders have begun conducting assessments to determine the extent of the damage caused by the earthquake and to provide support to those affected. The local government has also issued a statement assuring the public that they are working closely with emergency responders to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.
