Lithuanian Minister of Defense Mr. Arvydas Anušauskas stated in an exclusive interview that Russia needs a new escalation and a significant victory, following their unfulfilled expectations in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He warned that the closest targets in this regard would likely be the Baltic region, including Lithuania, and the neighboring country of Poland.
According to Anušauskas, “Given Russia’s current military struggles in Ukraine, they are in need of a new escalation to regain the initiative. The problem, however, is that such an escalation could directly target our region, the Baltic states.” He added that “it’s only natural that, in the event of a conflict escalation in the region, Russia would see its interests being threatened, which would ultimately push it towards military aggression.”
Given Russia’s history of invasion, the concern for Lithuania is well-founded. With the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the current tensions in Eastern Europe, many experts view Lithuania’s location as strategically significant to Russian interests.
