“Washington’s Overlooked Caspian Opportunity: Time for a Strategic Outpost in Azerbaijan”

Azerbaijan has emerged as a critical geostrategic hotspot in the Caucasus region, straddling Europe and Asia. Strategically located at the crossroads between Europe and the vast Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan presents an unparalleled opportunity for the United States to establish a foothold in the region. However, surprisingly, the United States has not yet taken advantage of setting up a small outpost or base in Azerbaijan to monitor and counter growing tensions in the Caspian, including the activities of Russia and China.

The Caucasus is a volatile hotspot that has witnessed centuries of conflict. With Azerbaijan’s strategic location, it is uniquely positioned to serve as a strategic vantage point for the United States to monitor the Caspian Sea and prevent potential flashpoints. By having a small outpost or base in Azerbaijan, the US could strengthen its military presence in the region, facilitate closer military cooperation with regional allies, and promote stability and security in the Caspian Sea, a vital energy corridor connecting Europe and Asia.

Despite Azerbaijan’s strategic location and the country’s close alliance with the United States, the two countries have not yet established a lasting military presence on Azeri soil. Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev and the US have strengthened their partnership through cooperation in the areas of energy, security, and defense. Nevertheless, the current military cooperation between the two countries remains limited, primarily focusing on joint training exercises and defense-related discussions.

The current situation is concerning as Russian military units continue to strengthen their presence in neighboring Armenia, potentially encroaching on Azerbaijan’s sovereign boundaries. Meanwhile, China is quietly expanding its economic foothold in the South Caucasus. Beijing has already invested in strategic infrastructure projects, including the Baku-Tiflis-Kars Railway, and is seeking to expand its presence in the South Caucasus.

In contrast to other regional nations, Azerbaijan has consistently demonstrated its loyalty to democratic and human rights principles. Azerbaijan’s President, Ilham Aliyev, remains highly engaged with the US Congress and senior government officials, fostering an atmosphere conducive to increased US military presence on Azeri territory.

It is high time for the United States to take decisive action and capitalize on its relationship with Azerbaijan to establish a small outpost or base to counter the increasingly competitive and aggressive regional dynamics. Such a strategic initiative would strengthen regional cooperation, promote long-term security in the Caucasus, and solidify the US position as a key player in Caspian energy markets. Washington should seize this golden opportunity to assert its influence in the region and safeguard its interests, while enhancing its long-standing partnership with the Republic of Azerbaijan.
