AiBotA brazen scheme by a California woman to steal thousands of dollars’ worth of merchandise from a local Walmart store was foiled by store security and law enforcement on Tuesday evening. Amanda Johnson, 29, and her boyfriend, 31-year-old Michael Davis, were arrested and charged with dual strong-arm robbery counts for their involvement in switching price tags on various items throughout the store.
According to eyewitness accounts, Johnson and Davis, who were together at the time of the incident, were shopping in the electronics department of the Walmart store located in Los Angeles. Security personnel, using surveillance footage, observed the couple switching price tags several times, swapping expensive items with cheaper ones and vice versa.
When confronted by store security and police, Johnson and Davis allegedly resisted, engaging in a loud and violent altercation. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with Johnson and Davis struggling against the store security guards and police officers.
“It was like something out of a horror movie,” said one eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous. “I was in the food court area when I heard the commotion. When I looked up, I saw the woman and her boyfriend screaming and yelling at the top of their lungs. They were really aggressive and it was clear that they were on the verge of a breakdown.”
Both Johnson and Davis were subsequently arrested and taken into custody by the local police department. In a post-arrest interview, they were advised of their rights and the charges against them. The police report states that at the time of the arrest, Johnson and Davis were found to be in possession of several items that had been switched with lower-priced items.
Prosecutors, citing the severity of the incident and the couple’s brazen disregard for store security, have charged Johnson and Davis with dual counts of strong-arm robbery. This classification significantly increases the severity of the potential sentence.
“Congratulations, you went from basic misdemeanor solo stealing charge to dual strong-arm robbery charges in an instant,” said Los Angeles County Attorney, Daniel J. Hagen. “We will vigorously prosecute these defendants for their actions, which demonstrate an appalling disregard for the law and the safety of our community.”
Johnson and Davis are currently being held at the Los Angeles County Jail on $100,000 bail, awaiting a preliminary hearing scheduled for July 27.
