Yesterday, Yemen’s Saudi-backed Presidential Leadership Council (PLC), the interim governing authority of the country, disclosed details of an alleged major assassination plot uncovered by local forces with the aid of Saudi intelligence. The scheme, reportedly backed by a foreign actor, aimed to target high-profile individuals within the PLC’s stronghold in Aden.
Minister of Interior, Ibrahim Haidan, a key figure within the PLC government, revealed the plot’s extent, stating that local security forces, bolstered by Saudi intelligence, successfully apprehended a sizable group of individuals linked to the plot. The identities of those allegedly involved remain undisclosed, as authorities continue to interrogate the suspects and gather evidence.
According to Minister Haidan, the terrorist cell had been operating in secret and was actively working to carry out the assassinations of prominent figures associated with the PLC, which has held sway over parts of southern Yemen since its establishment in April 2015. The PLC government has consistently received military and financial support from Saudi Arabia, a key player in the long-running Yemeni conflict.
Haidan maintained that the intelligence gathered during the investigation points to the involvement of a foreign power in the plot. While he avoided naming the suspected foreign actor directly during his statement, the reference was seen by many as an allusion to Iran, a long-standing regional adversary of Saudi Arabia in the Middle East.
The foiled plot has sparked concerns for the safety of Yemen’s key stakeholders and highlights the ongoing security challenges faced by the PLC in the fragile city of Aden. Amidst rising tensions and shifting power dynamics in the region, Yemen’s stability remains a contentious issue. The success in thwarting this assassination plot may serve as a testament to the collaboration between Yemen’s local forces and their Saudi allies, and it is likely that this episode will be closely monitored by regional observers and stakeholders alike.
This development follows other attempts to destabilize the fragile balance of power within Yemen. Yemen has been embroiled in conflict for nearly eight years, with the internationally recognized government being displaced in 2015 by the Iran-aligned Houthi movement. Since then, Saudi-led forces have worked to restore the government’s presence throughout the country.
As investigations continue, officials are yet to provide information on the identities of the targets or the potential motivations behind the alleged plot. The security situation in Aden and the surrounding areas remains precarious, with ongoing instability a threat to the country’s fragile peace efforts and regional stability.
