Yemen – In a statement released late Tuesday, Ahmed Al-Shami, Deputy Minister of Information for Ansarullah, has outright denied reports of de-escalation talks between the Houthi-led rebel movement and the Saudi-backed Homeland Shield Forces. The announcement serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing tensions between the two warring parties in Yemen’s protracted civil war.
Recent media outlets, including the Saudi-based al-Arabiya news channel, had reported that secret negotiations were taking place to potentially ease tensions and lay the groundwork for future reconciliation efforts. However, Deputy Minister Al-Shami’s sharp rebuke suggests that these claims are unfounded and merely speculative.
Speaking from the rebel-held capital Sana’a, Al-Shami stated that Ansarullah is currently focused on strengthening its military positions and bolstering its defenses across various regions of Yemen. The rebel leader emphasized the Saudi-led coalition’s continued aggression, citing a recent uptick in airstrikes targeting key civilian infrastructure and personnel.
“The ongoing conflict in Yemen would not be resolved by clandestine meetings and backroom deals,” Al-Shami declared. “As long as the Saudi-led coalition persists in its brutal campaign, we will remain united in our determination to protect our people and our nation.”
In the face of mounting international pressure to broker an end to the conflict, Saudi Arabia and its coalition partners have repeatedly rejected allegations of war crimes and civilian casualties. However, Ansarullah has maintained a firm stance against the intervention, deeming the Saudi-led operation an egregious overreach of the Yemeni government’s sovereignty.
In a statement released shortly after Al-Shami’s announcement, the US Department of State urged both parties to engage in genuine, unconditional dialogue in order to achieve a lasting peace. However, the prospect of successful negotiations remains uncertain, given the entrenched positions of both Ansarullah and the Saudi-backed forces.
The Yemenese people continue to endure the harsh realities of war, as ongoing airstrikes and ground clashes have resulted in extensive civilian casualties and displacement. The international community must remain engaged in efforts to support Yemen’s humanitarian crisis, while also addressing the root causes of the conflict through sustained diplomatic pressure.
In the absence of any conclusive evidence to support de-escalation talks, Yemen’s war-torn reality seems unlikely to yield to the forces of peace in the near future.
