CAIRO, EGYPT – In a stern warning issued to Israel, the leader of Yemen’s Houthi movement, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, has reaffirmed the group’s commitment to countering any Israeli escalation in the region.
During a televised address, Houthi emphasized that his movement remains in continuous coordination with other key members of the “Axis of Resistance,” a coalition of predominantly Shia states and militant groups that include Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, and Syria. He stressed that his organization will not hesitate to fulfill its duty in response to Israel’s actions, especially with regards to the ongoing Israeli military presence in the Gaza Strip, a besieged territory under a near-total Israeli blockade for over a decade.
“We will not stand idly by if Israel deploys its forces in Somaliland, where a new Israeli military base has been allegedly proposed,” Houthi added, further warning that the Houthi movement will “move at any time” to disrupt any such military activities in the African nation bordering the Red Sea. The Houthi statement is likely to heighten tensions in the volatile region.
This is not the first time that a senior Houthi official has issued a warning to Israel, underscoring the movement’s unwavering commitment to defending its allies and interests in the region. In recent years, Houthi forces have taken part in joint military exercises and operations with other members of the Axis of Resistance to counter Israel’s actions in the Red Sea.
In an apparent appeal to regional powers bordering the Red Sea, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Eritrea, Houthi urged countries in the area to unify their stance against Israeli activities in the region, emphasizing that they must take collective action to counter what he referred to as an Israeli threat.
As tensions continue to escalate in the Middle East, the Yemeni crisis has deepened with the involvement of regional as well as international powers. While countries bordering the Red Sea have long been concerned about the potential for conflict in the region, the Houthi’s call for unity is likely to increase pressure on these nations to take a more united stance against Israel.
Houthi’s warning may have significant implications for regional security dynamics but also serves as a reflection of the escalating conflict between Israel and the countries in the “Axis of Resistance.”
