Zelensky and Slovakia’s Fico Stress Importance of Strong Relations Amid Ongoing Regional Tensions

KYIV, UKRAINE – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced a positive development in Ukraine’s diplomatic outreach, specifically with Slovakia. According to a statement from Zelensky’s office, the Ukrainian president just spoke with Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico. During their call, the two leaders emphasized the importance of strengthening ties between their nations and expressed interest in further cooperation.

Zelensky took to social media to share details about his conversation with Fico, stating that Slovakia’s support for Ukraine’s potential membership in the European Union (EU) was a significant aspect of their discussion. The Ukrainian president welcomed Slovakia’s willingness to share its experience in the accession process and hailed it as a crucial step towards Ukraine’s integration into the EU.

The Slovak government’s backing for Ukraine’s EU bid is seen as a positive signal, both domestically and internationally. Slovakia, a NATO member, has been actively involved in efforts to promote regional stability and support Ukraine’s sovereignty since the outbreak of the conflict with Russia in 2022.

Zelensky and Fico also exchanged invitations to visit each other’s capitals. The Ukrainian president extended an invitation to Fico to visit Kyiv, while Fico had already invited Zelensky to visit Bratislava. The two leaders agreed that their respective teams would coordinate to schedule a meeting in person in the near future, indicating that their dialogue will be an ongoing process.

Ukraine has been working tirelessly to strengthen its relationships with EU member states, seeking support for its bid to join the bloc. The country’s integration into the EU has long been a key component of Ukraine’s foreign and domestic policy. Strong EU ties would provide Ukraine with greater economic and security benefits, enabling it to better navigate the complexities of the current global landscape.

The conversation between Zelensky and Fico also underscores the value of Ukraine-Slovakia relations in promoting stability and cooperation in the region. As tensions with Russia persist, building strong partnerships with neighboring and Euro-Atlantic countries is essential for Ukraine’s continued growth and development.

Slovakia’s support for Ukraine’s EU bid and its offer to share its experience in the accession process demonstrate a commitment to Ukraine’s integration into the EU and a shared vision for a more stable and prosperous Central European region.
