Iran Proposes Agreement to End War in Strait of Hormuz, Denies Joint US-Iranian Operations

In a statement released by the Iranian Foreign Ministry, spokesman Esmail Baghaei addressed recent media reports suggesting that the Iranian government has proposed joint mine-clearing operations with the United States in the Strait of Hormuz. Baghaei categorically denied these claims, labeling them as “the fabricated imagination of certain media outlets.”

During a press briefing, Baghaei provided further clarification on the Iranian proposal, stating that it revolves around drafting a comprehensive agreement aimed at bringing an end to the ongoing conflict in the region. He explained that this agreement would be followed by a 30-day period dedicated to discussing and finalising the implementation mechanisms.

As per Baghaei, the agreement in question consists of a 14-point document outlining the framework for a peaceful resolution. However, he emphasized that it is impossible to detail every specific aspect of the agreement’s execution within the bounds of this framework. “Within a fourteen-point agreement, you cannot finalise all specific details regarding its execution,” Baghaei remarked. “You require time. This thirty-day window is specifically intended for that purpose.”

In the context of the Strait of Hormuz, the Strait’s vital shipping lane has been the site of heightened tensions between Iran and the United States in recent years. The U.S. has imposed economic sanctions on Iran, while Iran has responded by threatening to disrupt maritime trade in the region. Tensions escalated further after the U.S. blamed Iran for a series of mysterious ship attacks in the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz.

However, Iranian officials have consistently maintained that the country will not engage in unilateral initiatives or joint operations with the U.S. without a concrete agreement in place. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has called for international cooperation to address the crisis, but thus far, international efforts have yielded little progress.

The recent Iranian proposal marks a significant development in diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis. While the details of the 14-point agreement remain unclear, Esmail Baghaei’s clarification offers insight into the Iranian government’s intentions and highlights the complex negotiations that lie ahead. As international tensions remain elevated, observers will continue to monitor the situation closely for any developments that may shed light on the Iranian proposal and its potential implications for regional stability.
