Netanyahu Warns Iran Against Withdrawal from Southern Lebanon

In a stark warning to Iran, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the country will not withdraw its presence from southern Lebanon, despite reported efforts by Tehran to pressure Tel Aviv into an exit. Netanyahu made the remarks at a joint press conference with the President of the United States, following a meeting in Washington.

Netanyahu’s statement appeared to be a direct response to an alleged attempt by Iran to force Israel to abandon its long-standing military presence in southern Lebanon, an area that has long been a point of contention between the two nations. The Israeli Prime Minister dismissed the idea of withdrawal as untenable, insisting that such a move would leave Lebanon vulnerable to Iranian influence and aggression.

“We have made it clear that we will not be forced out of southern Lebanon,” Netanyahu said, according to a press release from his office. “Our military is firmly established in the area, and we will continue to maintain our presence there in order to ensure Israel’s security and prevent the spread of Iranian influence in the region.”

Netanyahu’s remarks come against the backdrop of heightened tensions between Israel and Iran over the latter’s efforts to consolidate its position in Lebanon and the broader region. Iran has been accused of supporting Hezbollah, a Shia militia group based in Lebanon that has been involved in numerous conflicts with Israel.

Lebanon has long been a point of contention between Israel and Iran, with the former viewing the country as a key battleground in the fight against Iranian influence. The presence of Israeli troops in southern Lebanon has been a source of tension for many years, and Netanyahu’s statement is likely to be seen as a further escalation of this conflict.

In a separate statement, a spokesperson for the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that the military was operating in southern Lebanon, but declined to provide further details on the nature of the operation.

“It is our duty to protect Israel’s security and prevent the spread of Iranian influence in the region,” said the spokesperson. “We will continue to operate in southern Lebanon as necessary to achieve these goals.”

The US President’s office issued a statement in response to Netanyahu’s remarks, stating that the administration “strongly supports” Israel’s position in southern Lebanon.

“As the Prime Minister has said, the United States and Israel share a commitment to regional stability and security,” said the statement. “We will continue to work closely with our Israeli partners to achieve these goals.”
