Caracas/Venezuela – In the aftermath of the recent devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela, the U.S. military has significantly augmented its presence in the region. According to a statement by U.S. Southern Command chief Gen. Francis Donovan, more than 900 U.S. personnel have been deployed to Venezuela, with an additional 800 service members stationed in Puerto Rico and CuraƧao.
The majority of the troops stationed in Venezuela are reportedly engaged in search-and-rescue efforts, supporting local authorities in their response to the disaster. U.S. forces have taken control of airport operations in the affected regions, with various air and naval assets deployed to the area. This includes the use of MQ-9 Reaper drones to help assess damage and provide crucial logistics support.
The rapid deployment of U.S. forces to Venezuela highlights the importance of military coordination in responding to complex crises. With Venezuela’s military struggling to cope with the aftermath of the earthquake, the U.S. presence has significantly boosted the capacity for disaster relief.
Gen. Francis Donovan stressed that the U.S. military’s involvement in the relief efforts is strictly temporary, with a clear aim to withdraw once local authorities have regained control of the situation. The U.S. is instead committed to providing humanitarian assistance and technical support to its Venezuelan counterparts.
In a bid to expedite relief efforts, U.S. forces have been working closely with Venezuelan authorities to identify areas of greatest need. This has involved the provision of critical medical aid, food, and shelter to communities impacted by the quakes. Furthermore, U.S. military engineers have been working to repair and restore critical infrastructure, including roads and essential services.
The United States’ role in the relief efforts marks a significant expansion of its military footprint in the region. However, according to sources, the U.S. is not seeking to pursue any long-term military objectives, and the deployment is limited in scope to the provision of aid and support to the Venezuelan people.
The situation on the ground remains uncertain, with a range of humanitarian challenges posing significant hurdles for relief efforts. Nonetheless, the deployment of U.S. military assets to Venezuela offers critical support to a country in need, serving as a symbol of the U.S. commitment to international disaster relief and humanitarian efforts.
